Karl Schuhmann is a specialist for plastic and aesthetic surgery and amongst other things runs a practice in Düsseldorf. At the Trend Forum & Medical SkinCare, he will report on skin surgery in the service of aesthetics.
The renowned specialist has also been putting his expertise to use in humanitarian aid for a number of years. He is part of a team of colleagues who volunteer for the Interplast organisation in India, where they mainly operate on burns, hand malformations and cleft palates and jaws.
"Many people in India have suffered severe burns," according to the physician. Due to the shrinkage and scarring of the skin, these burns restrict the mobility of limbs considerably. By transplanting healthy skin to the burned areas, the function of the body parts is restored to give the patient less pain and more freedom of movement again. "Our hand operations can also enable some people to finally use their hands again," says Dr. Schuhmann. Plastic surgery as a life aid!
