Spray or suction? Which is the better solution?

There is no general answer to this question - both the spray technique and the suction technique have their advantages for the different treatment steps. The suction technique is particularly recommended for work that generates a lot of dust, such as grinding off large areas of callus on the sole of the foot or grinding off nails. The spray technique is suitable for work in smaller areas, for example around the nail. Here, excellent illumination of the working area plays a decisive role. Both techniques should be explained and taught extensively in training. Bettina Meyer-Schmidtke presents the different tools and equipment for the various treatment steps.

Price calculation in podiatry

Podiatrists in their own practice not only work therapeutically, but also have to position themselves as entrepreneurs in the increasingly competitive health care market. Accordingly, there are also a lot of organisational and administrative tasks on the agenda that cannot simply be billed, but must be taken into account when calculating fees: Preparation and follow-up, documentation, billing, other bureaucracy, organisation and marketing - smaller or larger obstacles in the daily practice routine that can definitely dampen motivation. Mechthild Geismann teaches the most important aspects of economic thinking and acting, explains the big and small costly pitfalls in costing and gives participants a small calculator for their own calculations.

Nail fold tamponades - preparation and pressure protection for orthonyxia using Remmele's Propolis Solution

Nail fold tamponades are an essential part of podological therapy. Among other things, they serve as space maintainers, pressure and friction protection and can also support the shape of the nail plate to a certain extent. Remmele's Propolis Solution is ideally suited for impregnating and fixing the various materials as well as for infection prophylaxis.

Validation in podiatric practice– 2 Continuing education points

There is still uncertainty in podological circles about the topic of validation. Many are of the opinion that validation of machine reprocessing processes is not mandatory. This is a fallacy, because at the latest during the practice inspection the question about the validation reports will be asked. In addition, "validation" does not have the same meaning in all countries as it does in Germany. This means that even those who have had a process validation carried out or who receive a reprocessing device from a foreign manufacturer that has already been "validated" are not automatically on the safe side. And that is just one example of the pitfalls that can lurk in this context. The problem: In the end, the operator of the equipment is always responsible for the correctness of the reprocessing processes and thus also for the validation. The training highlights the legal basis of validation and the associated necessary contents and regulations, so that the participants can assess whether the legal and normative requirements are met on the basis of the information provided by the service provider before the order is placed and after the report has been delivered.

Properly insured with liability and legal protection

The necessary insurances are usually taken out as soon as the business is founded, i.e. at the beginning of self-employment. As legal framework conditions, personal circumstances and other parameters change over the years, it is important to review the entire insurance cover regularly.  Especially in podiatry, there are many special features that not everyone is aware of - mistakes and oversights in the course of professional activity are thus almost a logical consequence. Here, liability and legal expenses insurance in particular play a decisive role. Holger Ullrich, insurance specialist, explains how to protect oneself better and more comprehensively and how to avoid nonsensical insurance policies. Using examples of claims, he also points out potential pitfalls.

Podo-felting – Preventive felt relief

Felt is used in podological therapy as an aid for pressure relief, immobilisation and padding, for example also as a relief material in diabetic foot care for wounds. The affected area is relieved by redistributing pressure. The special feature of podofelting is that pressure relief is used either before a wound develops (pre-ulcer) or for follow-up care of a wound that has already healed. The focus here is on preventive and rehabilitative podological therapy.

Wound care on the foot - the line between interdisciplinary cooperation and its limits 2 Continuing education points

The therapy of wounds on the foot is a great challenge - for everyone involved in this process. Especially in complex cases, interdisciplinary care opens up great potential for improving the medical care of patients. In order for the cooperation between podiatry and related professional groups to work well, it is necessary to clarify boundaries and possibilities precisely. The training introduces the legal basis and framework conditions. In addition, Sindy Burow provides tips on how to successfully implement interdisciplinary cooperation.

Key words:

  • Patients' Rights Act
  • Heilpraktiker Act
  • Podiatrist Act
  • Infection Protection Act

Podiatry 2030 - Panel discussion on the future of podiatry

Even a good twenty years after the introduction of the Podiatry Act, the professional profile and future of podiatry in Germany are still the subject of intense and controversial debate. In view of pressing social and health policy issues such as the shortage of skilled workers, the status of health care professions, cooperation and interdisciplinary networking, the discussion is clearly gaining momentum. There is still a need for information and action, both in the general and the professional public. Where is the road leading? Who needs to do what to ensure that the health care system is fit for the future and that all those involved work well and effectively together - in the interests of optimal patient care? How do podiatry schools professionalize? Are there nationwide standards or seals of approval? How can the industry support here? How can more young talents be recruited for the profession of podiatrist? Is it worthwhile to look beyond Germany? Representatives from associations, podiatry schools and the industry will discuss this on Saturday, April 1, starting at 4:30 p.m.

On the podium:

  • Andreas Greppmayr (Podiatrist, BSc Podiatry)
  • Dr. Annette Krützfeld (Association of Head Teachers at Podiatry Schools)
  • Klaus Rössler (German Association for Podiatry)
  • Simeon Ruck (Hellmut Ruck GmbH)
  • Günter Westkamp (podiatrist and teacher at the Völker School Osnabrück)

Selected problem cases in the practice of medical foot care and podiatry. Modern treatment concepts

Nail diseases, such as nail mycoses (onychomycoses), are a daily problem in podiatric practice that is difficult to solve. In her practical, interactive lecture, Anke Niederau, podiatrist and lecturer, gives an overview of different forms of nail diseases and modern treatment concepts. She demonstrates her successful therapy concept using concrete case studies, mainly from her own podological practice. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss their own problem cases.

Medical devices and the new MDR - Why?

The implementation of and compliance with the Medical Device Regulation (MDR) and the Medical Device Operator Regulation are complex topics that repeatedly raise questions in daily practice. Ramona Tröbs explains in detail what needs to be observed here and addresses the following questions: What is a medical device and how do I recognise a medical device? How is correct reprocessing, care and storage carried out in practice?,What are the most common sources of errors and how can I avoid them?

Prevention of pressure ulcers in the forefoot area - Causes of increased forefoot pressure in diabetes mellitus

The latest findings in neurophysiology show that people with diabetes have increased forefoot pressure even before the onset of neuropathy. Therefore, it is not neuropathy that is the cause of pressure ulcers in the forefoot, but rather the changes in the connective tissue caused by diabetes mellitus, especially the fascial structures close to the joints, above all the Achilles tendon and the plantar aponeurosis. Dagmar Klasvogt gives a well-founded insight into the topic and explains measures for prevention or for reducing the increased forefoot pressure, which can be easily implemented for patients at risk on the basis of these findings.
