Karin Darnell, one of the biggest names in the industry for over three decades, is being honoured this year with the “Golden Mask of Make-Up Artistry” for her illustrious career. Born in London, she is likeable, professional, discreet and entertaining - qualities that, together with her talent, ensure that she is in high demand.
Messe Düsseldorf and KRYOLAN Professional Make-up award the “Golden Mask of Make-Up Artistry” to make-up artists for extraordinary creativity, professional competence and special commitment to the profession as part of BEAUTY DÜSSELDORF. The award-giving ceremony will take place at the Meeting Point in Hall 10 on Saturday, 23 March 2024, at 12.30 pm.
With passion, charm and above all talent this professional make-up artist services her star models who predominantly come from the music industry. Karin Darnell accompanied “The Spice Girls” throughout their whole career and made sure the popular singers always made a glamorous appearance. Other renowned artists such as Kim Kardashian, Jessie J, Cheryl, Alesha Dixon, Gemma Chan, Dido or Myleene Klass also entrusted themselves to her creative hands. Her undoubtedly most prominent client in the show business, however, is Rihanna, for whom Darnell applied the perfect make-up in twelve videos and two movies. “I always want to stress my clients’ natural beauty. Most celebrities that I work with know exactly which make-up fits them. But at times it is also necessary to slightly adapt the look to make it fit for the red carpet while still coming across as natural.” This year's winner also loves working with actors and actresses and has already enchanted Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Gemma Chan, Naomie Harris, Vanessa Kirby, Rebel Wilson, Jennifer Stallone, Billie Piper and Jodie Comer with her make-up.
If Karin Darnell had a wish she would love to be the make-up artist of the British Royal Family, the members of which she ardently admires. Apart from that, Karin would have loved to work with such Hollywood icons as Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe or Lauren Bacall. “I love the skilful scene lighting and the especial make-up so typical of that age! Women were so wonderfully feminine,” says Darnell.
For editors’ desks and advertising campaigns the likeable make-up artist who lives with her husband, two children and numerous pets in Surrey, cooperates with world-famous photographers such as Annie Leibovitz, Terry Richardson, Rankin and Ellen Von Unwerth. Darnell considers the ability to cope with stress, keep calm and work fast as the key characteristics of her profession. On top of that, make-up artists should be capable of giving their clients a feeling being irresistible and looking fantastic.
Even beauty and fashion shoots for Harpers Bazaar and Marie Claire, the magazines, and various beauty campaigns for major cosmetics companies display her inimitable signature style. Karin Darnell also took care of participants’ immaculate looks at the British casting shows “The X Factor” and “Britain’s Got Talent”.
The winner of the Golden Mask for Make-Up Artistry describes herself as calm, carefree, concentrated and always committed to delivering a perfect job. “It is fantastic to have a profession that involves so much creativity and dedication. No day is ever the same and I consider myself fortunate being able to work with so many amazingly talented artists. This has allowed me to get to know so many celebrities and places that not many people get to see. I love my job and would not exchange it for anything in the world.”
